Shaare Zedek treats children from infancy through to adolescence. The Paediatric Department offers acute care to all children under the age of 16, care of children between 16 and 21 with chronic disease and care for selected individuals over the age of 21.
The type of paediatric inpatient at Shaare Zedek has changed in the last 20 years. In Israel the community based paediatrician can care for many of the mild to moderate acute problems and monitor stable chronic paediatric problems in a clinic setting. This means that the hospitalised patient is sicker, more unstable and complex and requires more intensive care and support from the medical, paramedical and nursing staff.
Mostly importantly, a paediatric admission, especially for children below the age of 10 (which represents the large majority of inpatients), must be understood as a "family admission". Providing proper facilities for parents is an integral and necessary part of a paediatric ward and is the current standard of paediatric care worldwide.
